What can be engraved?

You can typically include:

• Your surname (required by law for dogs)
• House number and postcode (required by law for dogs)
• One or two contact numbers (recommended for quicker reunion)
• Your pet's name (optional - some owners choose not to have the name as it can assist thieves to use your pet's name to claim ownership)
• Medical information if space allows (e.g. Needs Medication)

UK Legal Requirement

Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, dogs in public places must wear a collar with the owner's name and address engraved on a tag or inscribed on the collar. Including a contact telephone number is also strongly recommended to help your dog be reunited with you quickly.

Pet Microchipping Law

A visible ID tag is one of the quickest ways for someone to contact you if your pet goes missing, but it should always be used alongside a registered microchip with up to date details as required by law. Microchips provide permanent identification should your pet lose their collar or ID tag, while a visible tag allows members of the public to contact you immediately without needing to visit a vet or rescue centre to have the chip scanned.

• Dogs: It is a legal requirement in England, Wales and Scotland for dogs to be microchipped between 6-8 weeks of age and for the keeper's details to be kept up to date. (Northern Ireland has its own requirements linked to dog licensing.)
• Cats: It is currently only a legal requirement in England for owned cats over 20 weeks of age to be microchipped. Wales and Scotland have discussed introducing similar legislation, but it is not yet in force.
